For those "hopeless causes" the Saint commonly called up on is dear St. Jude. As one of the 12 apostles and in fact a cousin to Jesus, he has helped many a soul over all these years!
The prayer and method of recitation is on the Ave Maria's Circle website now and St. Jude is always ready to help us in our needs.
